Making Waves Doing What He Loves
By Dianna Troyer
At age 96, legendary surfing pioneer and businessman Dick Metz is like the countless waves he has ridden around the world for decades… always in motion.
From his home in Ketchum, tucked in central Idaho’s Wood River Valley, where he has lived for five decades, he says his lifestyle still energizes him. He keeps busy with the expansion of his surfing museum and the release of an award-winning documentary, “Birth of The Endless Summer” available on streaming platforms since June 20.
“I wake up every morning and can’t wait to do what I still love,” he says. “Depending on the season, I still surf, ski and ride my KTM dirt bike on the mountain trails around here. I love talking to people, keeping in touch with old friends, making new friends and preserving the history of surfing. I have a good diet, work out every day and still weigh what I did in high school. It’s exhilarating.”
